Rules for Writing: The ACS Guide to Scholarly Communication

Most chemistry journals require authors to format their articles in ACS style. You'll be using these rules for most papers and theses in Chemistry at UCCS. The ACS Guide to Scholarly Communication is a subscription resource, which means you have to access it through the Library.

Section 4 (Scientific Style Conventions) contains information on formatting:

  • Tables
  • References (Citations)
  • Chemical structures
  • Chemical nomenclature

Section 5 (Editorial Style Conventions) has information on:

  • Puncutation
  • Spelling
  • Capitalization
  • Units of measure
  • Other grammar related topics

In addition to these writing conventions, the guide has general advice on communicating as a scientist. This includes information on publishing in scholarly journals, poster presentations, slide decks, and data usage.

Abbreviated Journal Titles

ACS Style citations often use abbreviated journal titles instead of full journal titles. If you need to look up of confirm the correct abbreviated title for a journal article you are citing, you can use the search tool linked below.
