Creating Author Profiles

This guide covers how to create and update online author profiles to represent your scholarly activity.

What is SciENcv?

SciENcv is the new required biosketch format for applying to NIH and NSF grants. It's a brief CV covering the work, research, and awards that are most related to the funding you are applying for now.

SciENcv is:

  • Required if you are applying for NIH or NSF funding
  • Able to integrate with ORCID accounts for easy updating
  • Is created by you and can be customized to the funding or project you're currently working on

This page focuses on how to use your ORCID account to easily update your SciENcv. For basic help with SciENcv, please see the help manual link below and the Creating Your SciENcv video.

Connect ORCiD to your NCBI Account

1. Sign into your NCBI account and visit Account Settings.

  • (If you sign into NCBI using your ORCiD account, skip to the next section of instructions on Use ORCiD to populate your SciENcv.)

2. Scroll down to Linked Accounts and click Add account

3. Choose ORCiD from the drop down list.

4. You’ll be prompted to sign into your ORCiD account.

Use ORCiD to populate your SciENcv

1. Sign into your NCBI account. Go to your dashboard and locate the SciENcv section, and click on Manage SciENcv>>.

2. Click on the Create a New Document button.

3. Name your SciENcv.

4. Choose data source

  • To import items and activity from ORCiD, click on External Source, and choose ORCiD from the dropdown menu

5. Add the identifying information at the start of the application manually.

6. Items like your education and appointments should automatically transfer from your ORCiD account.

7. You can choose the most relevant publications (called products) from those associated with your ORCiD account.

  • By default, if you have a NCBI bibliography, those items will appear first for you to choose from. Click on the ORCiD tab at the top of the box to look at items on your ORCiD profile.

8. You can also choose to delete any positions, education, etc, from your SciENcv at this time if you choose.

9. Add any synergistic activities manually.

10. Check for any missing required fields or errors, using the pencil or edit buttons to do so.

11. View a draft to check your work.

12. Download the PDF to certify and finish this SciENcv.
