This guide is divided into several sections. Click on the tabs above to learn more about research techniques and tools that will help you complete your research assignment for this class. You will learn how to:

  • find reference sources that will help you gain an initial understanding of your topic
  • use Boolean operators, AND, OR, NOT, to construct searches
  • identify and locate books on your topic
  • distinguish between scholarly journals and popular magazines
  • identify the databases you can use to find journal articles on your topic
  • find and evaluate websites

First Things First!

You'll be doing research for your integration paper using Kraemer Family Library resources. Make the most of your library experience by taking the following three steps:

1. Set up your library account - You can't check out any books from the library (or request books from other libraries or palce holds on items) until you take your ID card to the circulation desk and set up your account.  Once you have a Library account, you can manage it online.

2. Install the VPN - You can access electronic resources 24/7 from an off-campus computer...If you are logged into the Library VPN (Transporter). Set it up on your home computer and turn it on each time you begin your research using Kraemer Family Library's resources:

3. Create an Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad) account - Need a journal article that the library doesn't have? You can request it from another library, but first you need to set up your interlibrary loan (ILLiad) account:

Your Research Launch Pad

The Kraemer Family Library's home page is your research “launch pad.” The “blue boxes” provide links to research resources:

  • Kraemer Library Catalog (place to look for books and other materials owned by KFL)
  • Select a database (databases are places to look for journal articles)
  • Journal search (use this feature to find out if KFL owns a particular journal that you need).
