RefWorks let's you save, share, and cite your research sources.

Import References from Other Citation Management Software into RefWorks

Start in EndNote:

  1. Choose the Format tab and click the Export References link.
  2. Select the references you want to export using the References drop down box.
  3. Select the “RefMan (RIS) Export” style from the Export Style drop down box.
  4. Save the file.

Move to RefWorks:

  1. Select the References tab and click the Import link.
  2. Select Desktop Biblio. Mgt. Software from the drop down menu for the Import Filter/Data Source option.
  3. Select Reference Manager (RIS Format) from the drop down menu for the Database option.
  4. Browse your computer to select your saved EndNote file.
  5. Choose the folder that you want to references to be imported into.
  6. A successful import will end with a screen that lets you know how many records have been imported.
    1. Records will automatically appear in the Last Imported Folder and the folder you selected.

Start in EndNote:

  1. Under the Edit menu select Output Styles.
  2. From the list of output styles select RefMan (RIS) Export.

Note: If you do not see this format, open the Style Manageer and check the RefMan (RIS) Export format. Close the Style Manager and repeat steps 1 and 2.

  1. Select the references you want to export.
  2. Under the Reference menu select Show Selected (or Show All if you wish to export the entire database).
  3. Under the File menu select Export.
  4. A dialog box will appear for you to select the location where you want to save the file. Type a file name and select a location for importing into RefWorks. Select Text as your Save As type and click Save.

Move to RefWorks:

  1. Select the References tab and click the Import link.
  2. Select Desktop Biblio. Mgt. Software from the drop down menu for the Import Filter/Data Source option.
  3. Select EndNote (RefMan RIS Format) from the drop down menu for the Database option.
  4. Browse your computer to select your saved EndNote file.
  5. Choose the folder that you want to references to be imported into.
  6. A successful import will end with a screen that lets you know how many records have been imported.
    1. Records will automatically appear in the Last Imported Folder and the folder you selected.
  1. Log in to RefWorks. Consider creating a new folder in RefWorks that identifies your EndNote Import for easy location of the imported EndNote library.
  2. In RefWorks, use the References menu and select From EndNote Database.
  3. Click Choose File and select your EndNote library – it will be a file with an .enl extension at the end.
  4. Specify what RefWorks folder you want to add you EndNote citations to. This is where having an EndNote Import folder already set up is helpful.
  5. Click on the Import button. RefWorks will import all the citations in your EndNote library. The will appear in the Last Imported folder and the folder that you selected.

Start in Mendeley:

1. Select the references you want to export for the All Documents area.

2. From the File tab select Export to create an export file.

3. Select RIS-Research Information Systems as your file type and save the file to your computer.

Move to RefWorks:

1. Select References and click Import.

2. Select RIS Format as the data source and RIS Format as the database.

3. Browse to find and select the Mendeley file that you save to your computer.

4. Click Import.

5. A successful import will end with a screen that lets you know how many records have been imported.

  1. Records will automatically appear in the Last Imported Folder and the folder you selected.

Start in Reference Manager:

1. Select the references you want to export.

2. Under the References menu select Export.

3. Either use the default file name or create a new file for exporting references.

4. Select the RIS format and the appropriate References Option.

5. Click Export (In newer versions of Reference Manager, export is located in the File menu.)

Move to RefWorks:

1. From the References menu select Import.

2. Select Desktop Biblio. Mgt. Software as your Import Filter and Reference Manager (RIS Format) as your Database. Browse for and select the file you just created from Reference Manager.

3. Click on Import at the bottom of the Import window. 

4. A successful import will end with a screen that lets you know how many records have been imported.

  1. Records will automatically appear in the Last Imported Folder and the folder you selected.

Start in Zotero:

1. Select the records you wish to export.

2. Right-click on the selection and from the menu bar select Export Selected Items.

3. Choose to export in RIS format.

4. A file will be created called Exported Items.ris. You can rename the file if you like, but keep the .ris extension. Save this file to your computer.

Move to RefWorks:

1. From the References menu select Import.

2. Select RIS Format as your Data Source and Database.

3. Browse for and select the .ris file you save to your computer and click Import.

4. your references will appear in the Last Imported folder.
