Find Fiction in the Library Catalog

Finding fiction in an academic library is not quite as easy as in a public library or bookstore, but it can still be done! To find fiction in the library catalog you will need to do a Subject search for the type of fiction or genre you want to read. The subjects for novels and short stories usually include the term "Fiction"  in their subject. Other popular genres of fiction also have their own subject headings that you can use to do a Subject search, including:

"Science fiction"

"Mystery fiction"

"Short stories"

"Detective and mystery stories"

"Romance fiction"

"Fantasy fiction"

"Paranormal fiction"

"Psychological fiction"

"Historical fiction"

If you are more interested in searching for books by theme, topic, location, or time period, instead of genre, do a Subject search for "fiction" AND a Keyword search for the topic you are interested in.

This type of search could look like the following: (Subject) "fiction" AND (Keywords) Scotland.

**If you find that you are getting a lot of results that talk about literature instead of being novels/stories, try adding NOT "criticism" to the end of your search string.**

Browse Fiction in the Library

There are a number of places that you can browse for fiction in the Kraemer Family Library. On the 2nd floor near the Apse, there is a New Books shelf and Popular Reading shelves. These shelves will have any new fiction books that have been recently added to the collection and some of the current popular books, including fiction and nonfiction. These are the easiest places to browse for fiction in the library.

If you cannot find anything that you are interested in on those shelves, you can head upstairs to the 3rd floor Main Collection to look for fiction books.

In the Main Collection you will find fiction in the call number ranges listed below. Remember that books about literature will also be mixed in these ranges.

American literature: PS501-3626

English literature: PR951-9680
