How do I Use the Library?: Borrow Items

An Introduction to the Kraemer Family Library

Can Anyone Borrow Materials?

Anyone with a PPLD (Pikes Peak Library District) library card can set up an account. You can check out up to 5 items at a time. Books check out for 3 weeks. Movies or CDs check out for 1 week.

Public users can only access our online materials (ebooks, streaming movies, etc) while on campus.

Picking Up Holds

If you placed a hold on an item in our library, or requested items from another library, they will be kept at the main circulation desk. You will receive an email when your items are ready to be picked up.

Ebooks & Streaming Movies

To access an ebook or streaming movie, you need to use the link to view the eBook or streaming film above the Location, Call # and Status information inside the item's full record.

the view eBook link in a catalog record is above the information about the location, call number, and status

If you are off campus, you will be asked to enter your UCCS username and password.

Finding a Book or Movie Inside the Library

When you discover a book or movie that you want to borrow, make sure to check the location, the call number and the status to be sure the item is available and so you know where to find it inside the library building.

Possible Locations (click here to see a map of the library):

  • Main Collection - upstairs
  • Main Oversize - upstairs
  • Reserves - main floor, behind circulation desk (give the call number to an employee)

Find a Book on the Shelves

To find a print book, first identify the correct section of the library by checking the location of the book. Most books are in the "Main Collection" which is on the 3rd floor.

Reading LC Call Numbers

Books sorted in correct order by call number. The book described in the text below has call number N66 .B634 1999

  • N - describes the subject area: read in alphabetical order
  • 66 -  describes the topic: read as a whole number
  • .B634 - describes the author's last name: read in alphabetical order, then the number as a decimal
  • 1999  - date of publication: read in chronological order

If you are unable to locate the book or the book is missing, ask for help at the Circulation Desk.

When you are ready to leave, bring your items and UCCS ID card to a Circulation Desk at either entrance.
